More Light

St. Mark’s is a More Light congregation welcoming ALL God’s children

A More Light church is a Presbyterian congregation whose session (governing board) has adopted a policy of welcoming all people, regardless of sexual orientation, into full participation and membership, including the right to serve as ordained officers if called by God and elected by the congregation.  St. Mark’s is part of a network of More Light congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) who are working to change the exclusionary, anti-gay policies of the denomination.  St. Mark’s is the only More Light congregation in Tucson.

What is a “More Light” church?

A More Light church is a Presbyterian congregation whose session (i.e., governing board) has adopted a policy of welcoming all people, regardless of sexual orientation, to full participation and membership, including the right to serve as ordained officers if so called by God and elected by the congregation.  We are part of a network of More Light congregations across the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) who are working to change the anti-gay policies of our denomination.

St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church is currently the only More Light congregation in Tucson.  The More Light ministry team is part of the broader Social Justice ministry team at St. Mark’s.  We sponsor More Light Sunday in June, bring Reveille (Gay) Men’s Chorus and Desert Voices groups for worship, staff booths at Pride in the Park (Coming Out Weekend in October), connect with the interfaith network of gay-affirming congregations, and have served rainbow cake following worship on Coming Out Day.  Our mission is to advocate for LGBT justice in church and society, and welcome LGBT persons into the full life of our congregation.
